一五一七年九月四日，馬丁·路德發表了他的九十五條論綱；同年十月三十一日馬丁路德在薩克森選侯教堂大門所張貼《有關贖罪券辯論之邀請》，反對買賣贖罪券，由此揭開了歐洲宗教改革的序幕。改教開始之初，路德及其志友常常要求召開基督教大會來解決改革中的種種問題。這要求得到德國當局的允許，1526年帝國議會在斯拜爾（Speyer）舉行，準許在基督教大會召開前各地區政府可自主決定本區域所欲尊奉的教派。然而，1529年，在神圣羅馬帝國皇帝查理五世的影響下，帝國議會第二次會議正式取消了一五二六年的準許，議會中的路德派對此決定提出抗議。那些在抗議文件上簽名及擁護抗議文件的人就被稱為“抗議者”（Protestant）。后來，該詞被用來泛指對羅馬公教（即天主教）抱抗議態度的諸多新教派，包括路德宗、加爾文宗、英國國教安立甘宗，統稱為“新教”，又稱作“抗羅宗”、“歸正教”、“改革宗”。
