希臘神話中，雅典娜（Athena）是奧林巴斯十二主神之一，是神王宙斯與墨提斯的女兒。據說，宙斯推翻父親成為神王后，大地女神蓋亞和天神烏拉諾斯預言他會被墨提斯所生的兒子會推翻他。宙斯害怕預言成真，就把墨提斯整個吞入肚中（被他老爸還狠）。此后宙斯頭疼難忍，就叫火神劈開他的頭顱。隨后就見披甲持槍的雅典娜從宙斯的頭中跳了出來。因為雅典娜是從宙斯的頭中誕生的，所以她是智慧的象征。雅典娜還是女戰神，但她與戰神艾瑞斯不同，她代表了戰爭的智慧與計謀。
