希臘人設想的地球上的平行斜坡希臘人很早就發現一個地區的氣候與太陽光線的傾斜角度有關。越靠近赤道，太陽光傾角越大，氣候就越溫暖；越靠近極點，太陽光傾角越小，氣候就越寒冷。我們現在知道，不同地區太陽光傾角不同，是因為地球是圓的。但古代的希臘人還不知道，依然認為地球是平的，只是不同地區有不同的坡度，地區坡度的不同造成了太陽光傾角的不同。因此，他們將地球劃分成很多塊邊線平行的斜坡，每條斜坡的坡度都有所不同，這些平行的斜坡就是希臘人劃分的氣候帶，在希臘語中稱為klima，字面意思是“斜坡”。古希臘人將世界劃分為7個氣候帶，古希臘著名的天文學家和地理學家托勒密（Ptolemy）將世界從赤道到北極劃分為24個氣候帶。英語單詞climate（氣候）就來自希臘語klima。而英語單詞lean（傾斜）與此同源，來自希臘語klinein（傾斜）。
