本單詞是喜劇的意思。古希臘酒神節的狂歡游行喜劇最早產生于古希臘。它的希臘文Komoidia是由Komos（意為狂歡游行）與aeidein（意為唱歌）合成。它起源于農民收獲葡萄時節祭祀酒神時的狂歡游行，游行者化裝為鳥獸，載歌載舞，稱之為Komos。
最初時，游行隊伍中只有一個合唱隊，歌唱酒神的頌歌。
后來，人們覺得過于單調，有人靈機一動，在隊伍中增加了一個角色，專門負責與合唱隊的隊長按照事先寫好的臺詞進行對白，這就是最初的喜劇演員，負責對白和表演。
