英語單詞bust來自拉丁語bustum，本意是“墳墓、火葬用的柴堆”。古代意大利的伊特魯里亞人相信逝者死后會在來世超生，并保留生前的習慣。因此人死后被火化，骨灰被放置在一個人形骨灰甕中，包括一個盛放骨灰的瓶身和一個人頭形狀的蓋子。整個骨灰甕被安放在布置得像生前居所的墳墓里，生前使用的一系列物品也一同陪葬。受這種喪葬習俗的影響，拉丁語bustum也被用來表示這種人形骨灰甕，后來被用來表示人的“上半身雕像”。19世紀后還衍生出“胸部”之意。
