來自波斯語Hindu,河流名，后用于指整個印度。后該詞也用來指美洲的土著印第安人，來自16世紀哥倫布初到美洲大陸時誤以為到了印度大陸，因此便稱當地土著人為印度人，更準確的說法為American Indian.
