這是一個印刷錯誤的結果所產生的詞。在古羅馬政治家、演說家、哲學家西塞羅（Cicero，106-43BC）的《致阿提卡人的信》15世紀版本中有個詞sittybas，意思是table of contents（目錄），被印刷工誤排成syllabos，以后又演變成syllabus。于是syllabus被賦予sittybas原先的詞義，即“目錄”，以后又引申為“提綱”、“課程大綱”和“教學大綱”等義。
