恐龍的英文名稱dinosaur是英國古生物學家歐文（Sir Richard Owen，1804-1892)于1841年取的。在他看來這是一類極為恐怖的類蜥蜴爬行動物，所以根據希臘語里意為“恐怖的”的deinos和意指“蜥蜴”的sauros組合成dinosaur一詞。從現代英語的構詞法來看，dinosaur系由兩個組合語素dino-（恐怖的）與-saur（蜥蜴）構成，含有“恐怖的蜥蜴”之義。其實歐文取的名字并不很恰當，因為恐龍和今天的蜥蜴之間沒有特別密切的聯系。
