superman一詞是1903年由英國劇作家蕭伯納（George Bernard Shaw，1856-1950）通過他的劇作Man and Superman（《人與超人》）引進(jìn)英語的。它直接譯自創(chuàng)立“超人哲學(xué)”的德國哲學(xué)家尼采（Friedrich Wilhelm nietzsche，1844-1900）杜撰的übermensch。尼采哲學(xué)中的übermensch是指通過選拔和淘汰進(jìn)化而成的理想之人或完人。他在《扎拉圖斯如是說》（Thus Spake Zarathustra，1883）中特別加以引用。若按字面直譯，本應(yīng)作“overman”或“beyondman”，但蕭伯納不喜歡üermensch一詞的讀音，所以über這一部分就改用拉丁前綴super-來譯。1938年美國一本連壞畫以superman為名，主角是一位名叫Clark Kent的superman。嗣后，superman又成為電視系列片乃至電影的片名和主角。這個詞就是這樣地得到了普及。隨之而來，英語出現(xiàn)了許多冠以前綴super-的新名詞，如superwoman（女超人），superstar（超級明星）等。
