英語單詞silhouette（剪影）來自18世紀法國財務大臣Etienne de Silhouette的名字。在他擔任財務大臣時，法國因為“七年戰爭”而陷入財務危機。他上任后厲行節儉政策，禁止鋪張奢華，因此遭到很多人尤其是有錢人的憎惡。為了嘲笑他，人們把他的名字當成了各種便宜貨的代名詞。當時在法國出現了一種便宜的肖像方法，即在紙上剪出人物的外部輪廓。與常規的肖像畫相比，這種剪影方式非常便宜。人們便沿用一貫的惡搞，將其稱呼為silhouette。沒想到后來這個詞竟然長盛不衰，正式成為了表示“剪影”的名詞。
