來自短語on mong.詞根mong，中間，同mingle，混在一起。among源于古英語on'in’和gemang'crowd’。以后短語on gemang縮合為一個詞onmang'in a crowd’（在一群之中），onmang最后又演變為among，而詞義卻沿用至今。=在古英語中是gemong(人群)，ge-(共同)是選擇性前綴，-mong和mingle(混合)有派生關系，因此on gemong是“在人群中”，引申為“在中間、被環繞”的意思；到12世紀，前綴ge-消失，on gemong成為onmong，并最終變為among。
