從詞源上來說，flour和flower本是一個詞，拼寫常混用，原先既指“花”也指“（谷物等磨成的）粉”。直到19世紀flour和flower在拼寫上才有了正式區分，意義也才開始有了分工。例如，在Thomas Tryon所寫的Wisdom's Dictates(1691)一書中可以找到“Milk,Water,and Flower”這樣的短語，而在詩人彌爾頓（John Milton，1608-1674)的長詩《失樂園》（Paradise Lost）中則可以看到“O flours That never will in other climate grow.”這樣的詩句。前者中的flower顯然指“面粉”，而后者中的flour則顯然指的是“花”。這和它們的今義恰恰相反。(參見flower）
