cent半身就是百，百分之一的意思。詞源同hundred，用于貨幣單位指分。
cent是美國政治家、外交家莫里斯（Gouverneur Morris，1752-1816)在獨立戰爭時期引進美國英語用以取代penny（便士）的。
在他擔任財政督辦助理的任期內(1781-1785)，他曾提出關于以dollar和cent作為貨幣單位的十進位制的建議，此建議后經杰斐遜（Thomas Jefferson，1743-1826)修改，成為現行美國貨幣制度的基礎。
cent直接借自法語，它在法語是“一百”的意思，源自拉丁文centum（一百），漢譯作“分”。
