hen，母雞，peck，啄。比喻用法。根據(jù)美國動物學(xué)家阿利（W.C.Allee，1885-1955)的研究，雌禽之間的所謂pecking order（長幼尊卑的次序）有一定的型式最長的或最兇的可啄次長的或次兇的，次長的或次兇的則可啄幼小的或一般的，依此類推。雖然在雞群中母雞很少啄公雞，因公雞為雞群之首。但在17世紀時人們普遍認為母雞常常啄級別比它低的小公雞的毛。于是有人將專橫的妻子與好斗的母雞相比擬，造出了henpecked一詞，以此表示“常受老婆責(zé)罵的”或“怕老婆的”。英國詩人勃特勒（Samuel Butler，1612-1680）是第一個給該詞下定義的人。桂冠詩人德萊頓（John Dryden，1631-1700)訴苦說，他常受老婆的氣，用了henpecked一詞。作家斯梯爾（Richard Steele，1672-1729)把古希臘哲學(xué)家蘇格拉底戲謔地稱作the undoubted head of the Sect of the Henpecked（懼內(nèi)者的當然領(lǐng)袖）。詩人拜倫（G.G.Byron，1788-1824）在《唐璜》（Don Juan）一書中寫下了如下名句“But-oh!ye lords of ladies intellectual，/Inform us truly，have they not henpeck'd you all.”
