單詞demon（惡魔）源自希臘語daimon，本意是“神靈、半神、守護神”，是基督教傳入希臘之前希臘人所崇拜的各種傳統神靈。基督教在希臘興起后，由于基督教是一神論，除上帝外不承認其他任何神靈，因此希臘傳統宗教所信奉的各種神靈就被剝奪了神的地位，在希臘語版本的《圣經》中，daimon被用來表示“異教神靈、不潔凈的神靈”，從“神”向“魔”轉變。進入英語后，demon的地位繼續被貶低，被用來表示“惡魔”。
