單詞demon（惡魔）源自希臘語(yǔ)daimon，本意是“神靈、半神、守護(hù)神”，是基督教傳入希臘之前希臘人所崇拜的各種傳統(tǒng)神靈。基督教在希臘興起后，由于基督教是一神論，除上帝外不承認(rèn)其他任何神靈，因此希臘傳統(tǒng)宗教所信奉的各種神靈就被剝奪了神的地位，在希臘語(yǔ)版本的《圣經(jīng)》中，daimon被用來(lái)表示“異教神靈、不潔凈的神靈”，從“神”向“魔”轉(zhuǎn)變。進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)后，demon的地位繼續(xù)被貶低，被用來(lái)表示“惡魔”。
