在古羅馬，人們把白天分成12個小時，從早晨6點鐘開始，到傍晚5點整。基督教在羅馬興起后，基督徒每天都要禱告，一般禱告7次，其中白天有4次，時間為6點、9點、12點和下午3點，在拉丁語中分別叫做Prime（初時）、Terce（第3時）、Sext（第6時）、None（第9時）。
英語單詞noon就來自拉丁語None，本來指的是下午3點整，但后來由于禱告時間的改變而變成了中午12點。
原來，基督教中有個為期40天的大齋節，以紀念耶穌曾經在曠野中禁食40天。在大齋節期間，基督教徒每天只能吃一餐，并且必須在白天的四次禱告都做完以后才能進餐。白天最后一次禱告（None）的時間原本是下午3點，但很多人實在餓得不行，堅持不到下午三點。
于是，在12世紀時，有人想出了一個兩全其美的方法，那就是將白天的四次禱告統統提前三個小時，早晨3點鐘就開始做白天的第一次祈禱（Prime），反正餓著肚子也睡不著。
這樣，白天最后一次禱告（None）的時間就變成了中午12點，大家就可以在中午12點吃飯了。從此以后，英語單詞noon的概念也隨之改變，從下午3點整變成了中午12點。n
