羅馬帝國(guó)的開(kāi)國(guó)皇帝奧古斯都（Augustus），原名屋大維（Octavius）。他是愷撒大帝的甥孫及義子。在凱撒被刺死后，成為凱撒的繼承人，他依靠高超的政治手腕，逐步掌握了羅馬的軍政大權(quán)，最終成為羅馬帝國(guó)真正的開(kāi)國(guó)皇帝。公元前27年，羅馬元老院因?yàn)槠渥吭焦锥谟杷鸄ugustus（拉丁文意為“神圣的、威嚴(yán)的”）的稱(chēng)號(hào)，后世即用此稱(chēng)之。為了和凱撒齊名，他也想用自己的名字來(lái)命名一個(gè)月份。他的生日在9月，但他卻選擇了8月，因?yàn)?月在其政治與軍事生涯中是個(gè)吉利的月份，羅馬元老院也是在8月授予他Augustus（奧古斯都）這個(gè)尊號(hào)的。于是，他決定用這個(gè)尊號(hào)來(lái)命名8月。原來(lái)8月比7月少一天，為了和凱撒平起平坐，他又決定從2月中抽出一天加在8月上。從此，2月便少了一天。于是從公元前8年起，8月改名為Augustus。Augustus一詞進(jìn)入英語(yǔ)后演變?yōu)锳ugust。這就是August（八月）的由來(lái)。所以，英語(yǔ)中的8月（August）實(shí)際上就是由這位羅馬皇帝的拉丁語(yǔ)尊號(hào)演變而來(lái)。
